As this part of London undergoes its relentless transformation, from post-industrial backwater to busy ‘des res’ hub, efforts are simultaneously underway to rewild pockets of the neighbourhood’s all-prevailing concrete.

Despite - in fact because of - its waterways, which once transported the chemicals, confectionary and plastics made here; and the public green spaces of the QEOP and Victoria Park; the middle of Hackney Wick isn’t exactly a lush oasis of greenery (even with the likes of Repot and Growing Concerns sprouting up in recent years.

However, green shoots are about to break through the paving stones on Prince Edward Road, as Hackney Council’s ongoing relandscaping of this important strip continues.

As you’ll see from the main photo above, in the shadow of a fine row of Sweet Toof’s translucent gnashers, new rain gardens and planting areas are being carved out of the paving. And there’s a chance to get fully involved in the planting process, too.

First up, there’s the opportunity to join a Community Design & Planting Workshop on Sat 2nd May, which will be one of the very final events to be held in The Loop before the redevelopment of its current warehouse home. There’ll be group work to decide upon the best and most suitable plants for the various spaces, then further dates over the next couple of months where locals can join in the actual planting of the beds, too.

So, if you love your shrubs and succulents, or want to learn more about planting your perennials, this is a great way to get active in improving the landscape while bringing the community together in a very wholesome and productive way🪴

They discussed the evolution of the title since the London 2012 Olympics and the corresponding dramatic changes seen in Hackney Wick, plus all the work that continues to be done in support of a permanent sustainable creative economy here.
